The World

An overview of the world of The Shape You Make — a society reorganised around a single rule: don't look. The complete world bible is available for professional review on request.

The Setting

A dystopian, post-pandemic England, lived under a culture of avoidance. Windows are boarded; screens are blanketed or blacked out; mirrors are covered or contraband; vehicles run with their reflective glass stripped out. People move with their heads bowed — hoods, hats, and black goggles with letterbox slits. Public-health posters read KEEP YOUR EYES DOWN, and meeting another person's gaze is treated as anti-social behaviour, patrolled and enforced.

The Origin

It traces back to Project Soul Lens, a classified military-medical programme that tried to image the persistence of consciousness at the moment of death. What it recorded was not what it intended. The captured anomaly sharpened with every viewing and began to behave less like data than like a cognitive hazard — and containment failed first among the people who studied it. The facility had long drawn protest from religious coalitions opposed to "soul capture," whose warning became the story's epigraph: "If you open this box, it will not be God you see looking back."

The Contagion

A perceptual contagion — a hostile presence transmitted through sight rather than biology. To see it is to catch it: through direct eye contact, recorded footage and corrupted frames, reflections and mirrors, optical or thermal scopes, or the eyes of someone already infected. Once caught, it cannot be removed. The early signs are quiet — eye pressure, watering, light sensitivity, after-images that won't fade, a startle that won't settle, and the slow erosion of sleep.

The Shape

Every infected person sees a personal manifestation — the Shape. It begins as a smudge or heat-haze at the edge of vision, there in the periphery and gone the moment you look at it. It gains posture before it gains a face, then wears the form of someone you have lost or feared. With every blink it advances — the blink becomes a betrayal, each closing of the eyes a yard of ground surrendered. The Shape is never simply seen; it is made. It takes your hurt and gives it a face.

The Relief Protocol

There is only one known relief: to force the presence onto someone else through eye contact. It buys a few hours' sleep — but it comes back, and it remembers, and it returns hungrier. The bargain turns the afflicted into predators, hunting desperate faces to offload their nightmare: strangers at hatches, voices on "support" lines, anyone who can be persuaded to just look, for a second.

The Shepherds

The Shepherds are blind — immune, because they have no visual channel for the contagion to use — and they guide blindfolded groups through contaminated cities. Clients form a chain, a hand on each shoulder or a grip on a shared cord, and the Shepherd navigates by sound, draught, touch, and pace-count. With ordinary travel near-impossible, the once-overlooked become essential. Their cardinal rule is absolute: never break the line; never remove a blindfold — no matter how anyone begs.

Society & Factions

  • State AuthoritiesEnforce eyes-down compliance and run containment behind the cover of public-health measures.
  • The WatchersRooftop observers with thermal scopes, officially posted to catch forbidden eye contact.
  • The ShepherdsLicensed — and unlicensed — blind guides; subject to conscription, unionisation, and black-market imitation.
  • Religious CoalitionsOpposed the original "soul capture," and read the outbreak as the cost of it.
  • Online FolkloreNeo-folkloric belief clusters — Smudge Theory, Mirror-Dreams, the Echo Chamber, and the sceptics' Watch Hoax — alongside predatory recruiters who lure newcomers through "support."

A Brief Timeline

  1. A research programme attempts to image consciousness at the point of death.
  2. The captured anomaly escapes the frame and begins to spread through sight.
  3. The outbreak runs behind a respiratory pandemic; avoidance measures take hold.
  4. Society reorganises around not-looking: goggles, covered glass, booth-buses, patrols.
  5. Early thermal-detection containment proves unreliable, and is abandoned.
  6. The blind rise as Shepherds, becoming the indispensable guides through a sightless world.
